Transport yourself to the Outlander time, and imagine moving thru the standing rocks of Craigh na Dun. Traveling in time to the Scottish highlands of old tales and legends.
What do you see? What do you hear? Maybe people speaking Gaelic?
Mo Duinne are the words that Jaime tells Claire in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon books and TV series by Starz.
Since this pattern was inspired by Outlander, and one of the knitted pieces that the character Claire Randall, later or Claire Fraser, features in one of the episodes.
Mo Duinne, means “my brown” one, so I thought that this name was a perfect match for the capelet.
If you happen to be an Outlander fan, you already know all this, but if you’re not, let me share a little more from the storyline.
The year is 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon – when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Shassenach – an “outlander” in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord… 1743
I came across the Outlander series presented on TV by Starz, but soon after falling in love with the story started to read the books too.
Not too long ago, I made a new friend that is also an Outlander fan, and also a knitter. She was putting together a mystery box set with Outlander as a theme. Her box’s main content are knitting stitch markers, and we decided to collaborate on this project. She asked me to create an Outlander inspired knitting pattern, so I told her that she could choose her favorite knitted item features in the series.
She asked if I could create a knitting pattern for Claire’s capelet, and I said yes. I promptly started to work on the sketch and design, make swatches to test the yarn and stitches, came up with the math and combination of stitches that allowed me to create the capelet shape to resemble Claire’s capelet, and after a couple of moths worth of work, it is finally time for the final knitting pattern to be released!
