I wanted to create this heart crochet wall hanging for a valentine’s day decor because I truly enjoy decorating my house and my kid’s bedrooms with seasonal decor, but because we are a military family and constantly moving, I tend to have a minimalist approach (but not too happy about it)
Carrying all your belongings with you every time you move is a complicated and tedious process. Not to mention that if you have more than the allocated weight for your soldier’s rank, the extra weight from the move will be paid out of pocket, which happened to me during this last move. And it was A LOT!
And how about we talk about inflation too? Everything has become so expensive, so making some decor has become cheaper than buying it. (well, for the most part. I’m sure there are things I can’t do, even with all the materials and tools in the world.) The old joke “why buy something for $7 when you can make it for $92 in craft materials” is no longer 100% true.
A small wall decor item can cost anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars in craft stores or Walmart and well above 20 in more expensive places like Anthropologie.

Paying high prices for seasonal decor that only stays up for a few days to a couple of weeks is not feasible for me. Besides the price problem, if I were to splurge, wanting to keep using the same decor for years is not going to happen with constant moves. Either it will get damaged in some of the relocations or I will have to sell/give it away to avoid paying even more on extra weight.
A small yarn wall hanging doesn’t weight much, AND if I were to need to give away some items to lessen the load, I can gladly give this away because I know I can make it again.
